Personal Reflection

It's been three years! Three years since I started my journey as a dewy eyed, fresh out of high school, 18 year old, starting a bachelor degree with the dreams of being a designer. Three years later and 21, I am proud to say just that, I've finished a bachelor degree and gained the title of a designer. 

Over the last three years of study, I have grown not just as a student, but as a person, developing a taste, that has led to signature. Late nights, coffee, and tears has led to a very strong work ethic. I have grown to push my self hard to achieve my overly ambitious design style consisting luxurious fabrics and endless hand finishings and embellishments. The last three years of study and growth can be seen in my final collection "From The Inside Out"- a title which means just that, from the inside of my deepest thoughts to the outside of my design aesthetic.

From The Inside Out, a collection made from 7 looks, 17 garments, 7 pairs of shoes and 7 head pieces, was a collection that pushed me to my limits and kept pushing to a state of calm. I found that once I over came the obstacles of a large, demanding handmade, hand embellished collection I was able to sit back and enjoyed watching my collection unfold. 

I was worried that cutting out all social events and focusing purely on my graduate collection would eventually wear be down and dampen my spark of wanting to continue a career in fashion but it has done just the opposite. Sitting back and directing a photo shoot, and standing proud in the panel of my collection and seeing my finished work has made me hungry for that feeling again. 

    

As a designer nothing feels better then seeing a concept that was once just imagination come to life in the shape of  a garment- in my case the shape of of pink shimmering, textured garments.

From The Inside Out as such a raw and personal reflection, I wouldn't change anything.

I want the hair and make up to be beautiful but not to much to take away from the garments. I think these looks capture that exactly, understated but bold at the same time.

Flash back to MSFW!!! Two Haus of Dethridge Collections

The inspiration for my  Evening Wear Drowning in the Stars galactica piece was based around this Japanese haiku. 

My range developed around the last line of the haiku “The Milky Way”.

The concept of my collection is the idea of being trapped in an undesirable place and finding an escape in a psychological fantasy.  This undesirable place leaves a person longing to get lost up in the stars and to evidently drown away in your fantasy over your own reality.

The range is largely made up of rich vibrant purple and pink jewel hues against the stark contrast of black. These colours reflect the fantasy of wanting to be amongst the Milky Way and the darkness that is being left behind.

Drowning in the Stars is an evening wear based collection that collaborates a mixture of fabric manipulation, transformational pattern cutting and jewelling techniques following a classic cut that has a modern twist and a that also focal points of dramatization.

The Inspiration behind this range is “Crown Jewels”

The crown jewels are timeless pieces in the English royal family; I want this range to incorporate the feeling of this timeless beauty, classic cuts, vibrant colours’ and statement making.

My collection “Crown your Jewels” is based around a monochromatic blue theme, of heavily embellished jewels and theatrics. This range is inspired by the English crown jewels, Lady Diana’s Sapphire ring, and excessive bling and focal design points.

I wanted to recreate the timeless beauty of this theme of clean cuts, vibrant blues and heavily embellished jewels and the traditional English high teas, but also adding a modern twist by using different forms of fabric manipulation, textures, and lots of jewels. I also wanted this range to incorporate a different yet equally unique culture of London Street quirk. This brings a little bit of edge to a classically strong design.

“Crown your Jewels” revolves around a blue and gold palette, soft wools, and fabric manipulation. This collection links back to my theme of jewels because by using the silhouettes, colours’, embellishment of the crown jewels it creates this elegant vibe that, and by mixing that with the contrast of London Street wear it becomes a young style.

I imagine the women who would wear this collection to be strong, with a sharp eye for unique art fashion. 

Cash-Mere/ Ride Together, Die Together

I bought this beautiful pink Prada cashmere. This cashmere is going to be used in my collection as jumpers. unfortunately working with cashmere has led to the alarming and informing realisation that I am in fact allergic to this beautiful fabric and texture but none the less it will still be apart of my collection. No pain with out gain and all those sayings applied when I started the development for my Ride Together, Die Together jumper with stunning quilted poplin sleeves! This is one of my favourite pieces from my collection

The Development of my "It's A Boo Thaaang" Fluffy tulle shorts, is very detailed hand work. pleating down to 1cm and sewing silk tulle has been tiring yet creates the most beautiful texture( that I make everyone feel).

Who ever wears these shorts may need to get use to people touching!

Haus of Dethridge- From the Inside Out Collection Mood Board

This is the mood board for the "From the Inside Out" collection. This collection has been inspired and developed from a skeleton hand drawing by my younger sister. This drawing has opened a new door for the direction of this collection, I have been extremely inspired by the spinal cord and the fine curved design lines of the ribs. The skeleton inspiration links beautifully with a monocramatic pink colour scheme working aswell with the soft floral detail.

The theme for my showcase collection is the two sides of a person, focusing on their darkest and brightest moments, what they hide from the world and what they let show through. Most people only focus on the positive and suppress the negative, but what if opening and sharing the negative was a better and more positive way to express yourself.  The inspiration for this collection comes from a very personal reflection, showing the sides of a personality that is seen on the surface and the side that is buried and vigorously fighting to be kept hidden. This collection reflects closely to the ‘angels and demons’ in one’s mind, this will be shown by the contrast of harsh and soft colour palettes, soft silhouettes, dramatic embellishment and extremities between each garment displaying the emotional conflict that can be held inside on a daily basis.
